COPLEY PRIMARY

PROJECTS / EDUCATION / COPLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL

CLIENT: Calderdale Council

LOCATION: Halifax, West Yorkshire

VALUE: Confidential

NOVO were appointed as part of a multidisciplinary team to carry out the RIBA Stage 3 design of the Mechanical and Electrical services within the two new school buildings constructed in Ovenden, Halifax.

Calderdale Council has invested £8.6 million into the demolishing and replacement of Copley Primary School and Moorside Community Primary School. The Victorian schools, opened in 1903 and 1818 respectively, had become too cost-ineffective to maintain and repair, thus the Council’s Cabinet approved funding and identified the two schools as a priority for investment.

The investment has seen the creation of brand new, modern facilities including new sports areas equipped for football, hockey, netball and basketball, for more than 500 Halifax pupils.

The schools have been designed to create dynamic and sustainable 21st century learning environments. BREEAM ‘Excellent’ status and BB101 compliance has been achieved in both builds, through the integrative design of natural ventilation and the provision of photo-voltaic panels, which provide a renewable energy source to the schools. These systems complement the Fabric First design approach used and all other services that exist within the buildings. NOVO also carried out the thermal modelling and Building Regulations Part L compliance for the new schools.

“The first day we welcome the children into the new build will be a very special one. The exciting redevelopment starting in September, of the park and play area on the old school site will also be such a welcome facility for the village community. The children have been involved in this redesign and cannot wait for it to be completed”

Nan Oldfield

(Headteacher of Copley Primary School)

Construction took place in two phases and was completed in time for the start of new academic year in 2018.
