My First Month at NOVO

Updated: Feb 1, 2019

Upon commencing my placement at NOVO, I was eager to see how the concepts I have learned about are applied in a business setting, as most of my engineering experience thus far has been restricted to theory.

During my first month, I have been getting to grips with the different software that is used in building services engineering, such as Hevacomp and IES VE, which I have been using to build thermal models in order to calculate thermal loads, as well as creating pipework schematics to calculate pipe sizes; it is interesting to observe heat transfer and fluid mechanic principles demonstrated in a larger scale, practical application than what I would usually encounter.

As a lot of the work I’m doing is completely new to me, the patience and approachability of everyone in the office has been crucial in helping me to feel settled as part of the team. Chris Franks has been supervising the majority of my work and is always happy to explain things that I have not come across before, and the other members of the mechanical team have pooled their knowledge on multiple occasions to assist with issues I’ve faced doing virtual modelling.

I look forward to further developing my knowledge and skills over the course of the next 11 months, and hope that I can prove myself to be a valuable asset to the business.
